Why You’re Not Marketing Your Business (And How to Start Showing Up)

You’re Not Too Busy To Market Your Business You’re Scared

Let’s cut the fluff.

Most small business owners say they don’t have time to market their business. Too busy. Too many client projects. Too much admin.

But if we’re being honest?

You’re not too busy. You’re scared.

Scared of being visible. Scared of getting it wrong. Scared of being judged, ignored, or called out.

This isn’t about laziness or lack of ambition. It’s about safety. Visibility = risk. And risk makes our nervous systems freak out.

However, here’s what I've learned after working with dozens of small business owners.

Your people can’t find you if you’re hiding.

Let’s unpack what’s really going on.

😨 The Fear That Hides Behind “I’m Just Not Ready”

It doesn’t look like fear at first. It looks like:

  • Tweaking your website... again
  • Obsessing over fonts
  • Researching reels trends for 3 hours
  • Planning to post, but never hitting publish

Sound familiar?

You’re not broken. This is fear dressed up as productivity. And it’s incredibly common.

🧘‍♀️ Real-World Example. Natasha’s £300 Post

Natasha runs a small crystal healing business. She hadn’t posted on Instagram in months.

Not because she didn’t care, but because she was scared she’d be seen as “unqualified” or “woo-woo”.

We sat down and rewrote one simple story post about why she started her business. It wasn’t salesy. Just honest.

That post? 💸 It brought in 4 new customers and over £300 in sales.

People don’t connect with perfection. They connect with real stories. Stories that they can see themselves in.

🛠 Real-World Example: David Went Faceless (and Booked Out)

David builds beautiful custom furniture, but refuses to show his face on video.

Instead, we filmed his hands at work. Sanding, drilling, assembling. With minimal captions and a calm vibe.

Guess what? He didn’t just get engagement. He got booked out locally just from being visible in his own way.

🚫 Let’s Bust 3 Common Marketing Myths

Myth 1: “I need to be on every platform.”  No, you need to be on the right one, quality over chaos.

Myth 2: “I need to be perfect first.”  Perfection kills progress. Confidence comes from action, not prep.

Myth 3: “No one’s watching.” ,Someone is. They’re just waiting for you to show them who you are.

💡 What If You Just Started With One Post?

You don’t need a massive content plan or a fancy funnel. You need to show up once as yourself.

👉🏿 Tell a story. 👉🏿 Share your values. 👉🏿 Speak to a problem your people are actually facing.

It doesn’t need to go viral. It just needs to be seen.
